Chinese 5 Spice Burgers with Spicy Mayo and Salsa
1 pound ground beef
1 pound ahi tuna
1 tablespoon Chinese 5 spice seasoning
1/3 cup chopped fresh mint and cilantro
3 spring onions
2 inches fresh ginger
Olive Oil
Fresh spinach leaves
4 Buns
For the mayonnaise spread
1/2 cup light mayo
1 tsp Chinese 5 spice seasoning
4 tablespoons garlic chilli sauce
For the salsa
1.5 large tomatoes, diced
1 ear of fresh corn, rinsed
1 small red onion, finely diced
1 Zest of 1 lime
Juice of 1 lime
Combine mayo dip ingredients and combine in a bowl. Move to the fridge, and do the same with the salsa ingredients into a separate bowl.
Place into a food processor the ginger, spring onions, mint, cilantro, Chinese 5 spice, cod and the ground meat. Process until combined.
Form the mix by hand 5 large burgers.
Coat each burger is olive oil. Place on baking sheet.
Broil each side for around 3-5 minutes. Be gentle otherwise they will crumble.
Serve with fresh spinach leaves in your buns with salsa and the spicy mayo.
This recipe came about because I can’t eat eggs. I really wanted crab cakes but they need eggs to bind it together. This was my solution.
I also tend towards Asian flavors so I incorporated Chinese 5 spice, cilantro and Asian garlic chili sauce. I intentionally added a lot of the chili sauce to the mayo. It’s the only part of the recipe that has any heat so I wanted to stand out.
I made Vietnamese pickled vegetables as a side for this meal. Check back tomorrow for the recipe.
